Road trip with your pup
Road Trip with Your Pup: Essentials for the Car

There’s nothing better than being able to go on a road trip with the whole family—pups included! If you’re planning on bringing your dog along for the adventure, ensure that the trip is smooth, safe, and enjoyable by considering their needs. From packing the essentials to planning for ultimate comfort in the car, a little preparation can go a long way for our canine companions.

How to Prepare

  • Start with training: Before you even consider a road trip with your dog, determine their comfort level in the car. Does your dog tend to get sick on short drives? Does your dog experience travel anxiety? If so, it may be best to stick with shorter road trips for your furry friend. Then, spend some time training your dog to perform desired actions, such as jumping in the car when it’s time to keep driving. The more comfortable your dog becomes with this environment, the better chance you’ll have of taking longer trips that they enjoy.
  • Provide comfort: Whether your dog will be in the car for 2 hours or 2 days making their way to the destination, their comfort should be a priority. Don’t pack your car full of suitcases, only leaving a tiny space for your dog. Consider using a crate during your travels, or bring your dog bed from home for a cozy spot to nap. Your dog should also have access to water throughout the drive (not just during stops), and there should be plenty of airflow to keep them cool.
  • Consider sleeping arrangements: Before you leave for your trip, do some research on where you’ll be stopping each night. If you want a hotel or Airbnb, make sure the place is dog friendly. Campgrounds can be a great alternative that provide plenty of space for your dog to move after being in the car all day. While some campgrounds still require dogs to be on-leash, you may find yourself in a less settled area with room to run.
  • Plan your breaks: Just like we need to stretch our legs and get fresh air, our dogs also need time outside of the car. Find dog parks along your route where your dog can burn some energy and socialize with other pups. Look for gas stations that have a designated dog area—you may meet some fellow canine travelers! Or explore the town by walking around neighborhoods. It’s best to stop every 2 to 3 hours to ensure your pup’s comfort.
